Three was released in December of 1997 to the same critical acclaim as previous Van Gogh albums. One reviewer called it "a snappy, hooky, pop album with smarts", and said, "it's clear this singer/songwriter duo has a dynamic, if not a totally unique, musical vision." The sound on Three is a little darker and heavier than on Bubble. The growing level of confidence exhibited throughout is remarkable as, stylistically, the songs range from harder-edged rock ("Vital", "See This Coward Run"), and power-pop ("Julie Anne", "Apathies & Anyways"), to mid-tempo rockers ("Love Like This", "ZuZu's Petals"), to melodic psychedelia ("Cinnamon Days", "Trying To Remember What Evelyn Said"). It never loses its sense of cohesiveness. It all fits together as a whole and flows seamlessly from song to song. Robby produced the album and several of the songs were recorded in his home studio. Said Abdelsayed, a disabled artist they met in California, was invited to do the album cover and Robby finished out the layout. Early
1998 brought an unexpected surprise. Robby received a phone call from
a representative of Prince. Van Gogh was being considered for the honor
of receiving a previously unreleased Prince tune to record, providing
they could meet certain criteria. Soon a package containing a cassette
demo of Prince performing a song entitled "Van Gogh", was delivered
to Robby's door. Prince recently released his version through his fan club – so both versions can now be compared, to see just how different they are. The Prince fans from around the world have been fantastic. While recording the new songs, Robby was approached by Gold Pictures to write a song for an independent film. The result was "Ready, Willing, & Able". This intriguing song featured a different set of lyrics sung from the left and right speakers. And a special shout-out to some of the extraordinary musicians on Three.
